The effect is real

Testosterone therapy for diagnosed hypogonadism is a medical treatment. It involves symptoms, lab testing, follow-up, dose adjustment, and monitoring. That is completely different from someone buying hormones because they want faster results.

The Endocrine Society guideline is not written like a gym forum. It is about diagnosing hypogonadism, checking symptoms and lab values, and monitoring treatment over time (Bhasin et al.). That is a different world from ordering hormones online because progress feels slow.

What gets left out online

Online posts tend to show the physique and skip the biology. Testosterone can suppress natural production, reduce fertility, worsen acne, affect hair loss risk, shift cholesterol markers, and change mood. Some risks depend on dose, duration, genetics, and whether other drugs are stacked with it.

For a teenager, the tradeoff is even worse. The endocrine system is still developing, and using hormones for gym progress can create problems that are much bigger than a plateau on bench press. Pope et al. reviewed performance-enhancing drug harms and described endocrine, psychiatric, cardiovascular, and liver-related risks across these drugs (Pope et al.). That does not mean every user has the same outcome, but it does mean the downside is much bigger than acne and mood swings.

My thoughts

Testosterone is interesting to study because it proves how powerful hormones are. But that is exactly why it should not be treated like pre-workout.

If the goal is building muscle without medical need, the smarter path is still training, food, sleep, and time. Hormones belong in a clinic, not a group chat protocol.
